Forensic Healthcare Program (FHP)

Mission

Provide timely, compassionate, patient-centered, trauma-informed healthcare when a patient discloses interpersonal violence (IPV) such as sexual assault, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, strangulation, child abuse and neglect, or other acts of unwanted violence, to active-duty service members, beneficiaries, and DoD civilian employees.

Provider who oversees the program and staff/coordinates follow up care and assists with patient care plan development

(FHE-A/P) Forensic Healthcare Examiner
Specially trained providers who perform a medical forensic initial examination for adult and pediatric patients

(FHA) Forensic Healthcare Assistant
FHAs are medically trained personnel who assist the FHE, performing non-examination tasks. 

(FHP-P) Forensic Healthcare Program Follow-up Provider
Provider who provides follow-up care for forensic healthcare patients after their initial exam

Hours of Operation to Receive Care:

William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) FHP provides 24/7 medical-forensic healthcare response for adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients. Our acute forensic healthcare program is based out of the WBAMC Emergency Department.

Types of Examinations

Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE)
This exam occurs when there is a report of a sexual assault.

Forensic Exam (FHEX)
This exam occurs when there is report of physical violence or abuse.

Based on the type of examination, this includes:
  • Background Information 
  • Patient Consent 
  • Patient History 
  • Abuse/Assault History 
  • Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault Toxicology Kit 
  • Physical Exam 
  • Photographs 
  • Forensic Samples

Forensic Healthcare Provider Follow Up Care (Recommendations):

Initial 24-72 hours 
  • Discuss medical needs 
  • Review lab results 
  • Repeat photographs if needed 

At 3 and 6 weeks 

  • Discuss medical needs
